What Causes a Blocked Toilet?

Toilets are designed to handle one thing reliably: human waste and a sensible amount of toilet paper. Anything else is asking for trouble. Some causes are obvious. Others build quietly until one flush is the one that doesn't go down.

The most common culprits we see:

  • "Flushable" wipes (which aren't actually flushable, despite the label)
  • Sanitary products, nappies, and cotton buds
  • Excess toilet paper used in a single flush
  • Kids' toys, hairbrushes, and other foreign objects
  • Tree root intrusion in the sewer line connecting your toilet to the main
  • Partial pipe collapse or misalignment in older properties
  • Mineral build-up in the trap or s-bend
  • A weak flush from a faulty cistern that doesn't clear waste properly

The cause matters because it changes the fix. A foreign object near the bowl is a quick job. A root invasion in the sewer line is a CCTV inspection followed by jetting. That's why we don't quote a price until we've worked out what's actually happening.

Signs Your Toilet Is Blocked or About to Block

Most blocked toilets give you warning before they fully back up. Catching the signs early can save you a much bigger mess.

  • Water rising higher than usual in the bowl before draining
  • Two or three flushes needed to clear what one flush used to handle
  • Gurgling sounds from the toilet or nearby drains when you flush
  • A slow-draining bowl that takes a noticeable beat to clear
  • Unpleasant smells coming from the toilet or surrounding pipes
  • Water appearing in the shower or laundry trough when you flush
  • Water or matter rising from the pipe outside the building ( ORG )

When It's Time to Call a Plumber

Some blocked toilets shift with a plunger and a bit of patience. Others need a plumber with the right equipment. Call us when:

  • The plunger isn't doing the job after a few honest attempts
  • The same toilet keeps blocking despite clearing it
  • More than one fixture is slow at the same time (a sign of a main line issue)
  • Water is backing up into the shower, bath, or laundry when you flush
  • You can smell sewage outside or in the bathroom
  • You're in a rental and need a professional record of the issue

Not sure which one applies? Give us a quick call. We'll ask a few questions over the phone and let you know if you can handle it yourself or if we need to come out.

What to Do When Your Toilet Blocks

First rule: stop flushing. The toilet can't process what's already there. Adding more water just risks an overflow onto the bathroom floor, which turns a plumbing problem into a clean-up nightmare.

Skip the chemical drain cleaners. They rarely shift a real blockage in a toilet, they can damage older pipes and porcelain, and they make the job harder for the plumber who arrives afterwards. Hot water is fine. Chemicals are not.

If all the drains are backing up around the toilet avoid using any fixtures through your sewer system this is a sign you have a main line blockage you need a plumber .

Then give us a call. We'll work through a quick assessment and get someone on the way.

Blocked Toilet Situations We Solve

We'll tackle any blocked toilet on your residential or commercial property.

Partial Blockages & Slow Flushing

01
A partial blockage is the warning shot. The toilet still flushes, but the bowl drains slowly or the water level sits higher than it should. Usually it's a build-up of paper or non-flushables in the s-bend. We clear it with a drain machine or plunger and run a camera through the line if anything looks off. By continuing to use your toilets when they are slow to drain you could end up with a major blockage costing you more.

Complete Blockages

02
When nothing's going down, it's usually a foreign object or a mass of non-flushables sitting in the trap or just past it. We use fast effective equipment for fixture-level blockages and high-pressure jetting if the issue is deeper down the line. We clear it, test it, and show you the result.

Recurring Blockages

03
If the same toilet blocks every few weeks, the cause is further down the line. Root intrusion, a partial pipe collapse, or build-up in the sewer needs CCTV to identify and jetting to clear. We'll show you what the camera sees and quote any structural repairs before going further.

Blocked Toilets in Rental Properties

04

Renting? We handle rental jobs all the time. We provide a clear invoice and (if needed) a brief written report you can share with your property manager or landlord. We'll let you know on site whether the cause sits with the tenant or the property owner.

How We Unblock Toilets: Equipment and Methods

We bring the right tools to every job. No guessing. No "let's try this and see."

CCTV Drain Camera Inspection

For recurring blockages or anything where the cause isn't obvious from the bowl, we run a CCTV camera through the toilet line to see exactly what's going on.

You see what we see. No repairs proceed without a price and your approval. See our CCTV drain camera inspections page for more.

High Pressure Water Jetting

When the issue is deeper than the s-bend, think main sewer line, root invasion, or hard build-up further down, jetting is the answer.

High-pressure water clears the full pipe circumference and flushes the line completely clean. More on our high-pressure water jetting page.

The Plumbers mate - Plunge and Release

Sometimes a plunge and plumbers knowledge is all you need to get back up and going, from there we can identify why the blockage may have occurred and advise how to avoid it next time.

A toilet that blocks repeatedly almost always points to something past the bowl: tree root intrusion in the sewer line, a partial pipe collapse, or a build-up that won't shift with a plunger. A CCTV inspection finds the cause so we can fix it properly, rather than clearing the same blockage every few weeks.

Sometimes. A heavy paper jam can soften over an hour or two and flush through. If it hasn't cleared after that, it won't sort itself. Calling a plumber is the next move.

We charge upfront fixed pricing for every job. Once we've had a quick look on site, we give you the full price before any work starts. Call us on 0429 359 081 for a price on your situation.

We'd recommend against it. Chemical cleaners rarely shift a real blockage, can damage older pipes and porcelain, and create a hazardous mix for whoever clears the toilet afterwards. Hot water and a plunger are safer. If those don't work, call us.

It can, especially if you keep flushing. If water is rising in the bowl, stop flushing and turn the water off at the stop valve behind or below the toilet. That stops any further water entering the cistern.

Air is getting back through the pipe instead of the water flowing through cleanly. Usually it means a partial blockage further down the line, or a venting issue. Worth getting checked before it becomes a full blockage.

No. "Flushable" wipes don't break down like toilet paper. They cause more blockages than any other single product we see. Bin them.
